Welcome to the Nidderdale Society....

One of the eighteen dales in North Yorkshire, Nidderdale, is within a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, lying in the upper valley of the River Nidd, from which it derives its name.  People living in this Dale enjoy it so much that, in 1964, they created an organisation - The Nidderdale Society - which exists with this aim: “For the preservation of the natural character of Nidderdale”.  Whilst some members live outside Nidderdale, most dwell in its only town - Pateley Bridge, or one of the many villages lying somewhere along the River Nidd.

The Nidderdale Society is open to everyone.  With the exception of the months June to August, inclusive, and December, its members meet on the third Monday of each of the other months, (there are occasional changes), at Dacre Banks Village Hall.  Each meeting is well attended by upwards of 80 people who are able to listen to some exceptional speakers, (usually accompanied by audio visual aids), on a variety of topics, most of which but not all, are about Nidderdale and its environs.  The talks may cover the history, geology, botany, flora, fauna and culture or, indeed, any aspect of the Dale. Other subjects are also frequently included in the programme.

In addition to talks, the Nidderdale Society also has a regular, once per month, walk. None of the walks is too strenuous; each is about 5 miles in length and the pace is equal to that of the slowest walker, so have a go.

Once each year, normally in June, the Nidderdale Society holds a whole day Annual Outing; such Outings are extremely popular and very good value for money.

The annual subscription is only £10 per year and this includes light refreshments, attendance at all talks and walks and participation in any of the special interest groups.  For those not wishing to join for an entire year, attendance at any one of the Talks’ meetings is just £4.  We look forward to seeing you and making you very welcome.

The Nidderdale Society became a registered charity in March 1965 (registration number: 240753).
